Become aware of the Non GMO Alternatives

Say No to GMOs and Yes to the Non-GMO Alternatives

As Monsanto’s ownership of seed companies continues to grow, so must our awareness of non-GMO alternatives.

In our theme of Buyer Beware, let’s look at one of the food goliaths that is taking over a good portion of our food supply. After researching more and more about Monsanto, it reminds me how incredibly important it is to purchase local, seasonal, organic fruits and vegetables and free-range, organic animal products from small producers and farmers that you know and believe to be trustworthy.1

In case you are not familiar with Monsanto, it is an “…American-owned, multinational agrochemical and agricultural biotechnology corporation…” It was started by John Francis Queeny, who  formed Monsanto Chemical Works in 1901, back when chemical companies were on the rise. It was formed primarily to produce the artificial sweetener saccharin. “…By the 1920s, Monsanto had expanded into sulfuric acid and polychlorinated biphenyl, or PCB, a coolant used in early transformers and electric motors, now more famous as a pernicious environmental contaminant. The company moved on to plastics and synthetic fabrics, and by the 1960s it had sprouted a division to create herbicides, including the Vietnam-era defoliant Agent Orange. A decade later, Monsanto invented Roundup, a glyphosate-based weed killer that farmers could apply to reduce overgrowth between crops, increasing productivity…” Monsanto’s resume of other achievements include the production of the insecticide DDT, aspartame and bovine growth hormone ”all of which are considered to be a threat to our  water safety,  global ecosystems and biodiversity…“2*

Recently acquired by Bayer, Monsanto is a leader in the area of developing and selling genetically modified seeds, and one of the largest producers of GMO food products. They also are well known for their development and application of associated chemicals, to include the infamous Roundup, a glyphosate-based herbicide.1*

Roundup is widely used both commercially and privately. Though it is promoted by Monsanto as harmless to humans, many health experts claim it is not. …The residues of Roundup, which remain in genetically modified foods, are believed to cause many dangerous effects to human health, including the death of embryonic cells and extreme damage to the intestinal microbiome…”1*

In 2005, Monsanto bought the world’s largest vegetable seed company Seminis.  “…It is estimated that Seminis controls 40 percent of the U.S. vegetable seed market and 20 percent of the world market—supplying the genetics for 55 percent of the lettuce on U.S. supermarket shelves, 75 percent of the tomatoes and 85 percent of the peppers, with strong holdings in beans, cucumbers, squash, melons, broccoli, cabbage, spinach and peas. The company’s biggest reenue source comes from tomato and pepper seeds, followed by cucumbers and beans…” (2,3)*

Seminis’ varieties are used in large industrial production which supply supermarkets and are also used by regional conventional and organic farmers as well as gardeners growing at every volume and of every nature. Their seed offerings include over 3500 varieties and can be found in a number of commercial and garden seed catalogs.3*

The website NesaraNews published a full list of Seeds that are owned by Monsanto or Seminis or that sell even small percentage of seeds from them. I’ve copied this list for you here: 3*

I hope this is helpful as you continue your journey towards healthful living. It is tricky to navigate which foods are clean and free of pesticides, GMOs, antibiotics and other additives. Continue to read labels and support companies, local farmers and grocery stores that offer organic and Non-GMO products.

Healthiest wishes,

Kelli
