Beware of Candida overgrowth effecting your health

The real reason behind your post holiday blahs might be lurking in your gut.
Beware of Candida overgrowth and the effects it can have on your health.

They came (the holidays). You saw (the desserts). You conquered. (The dessert table).

Now that it’s all over, you may be feeling some side effects of an overindulgent holiday that most likely included a more than normal alcohol and sugar intake, along with an unusual amount of stress.  Ask yourself, “Do you feel sluggish and lethargic?” “Have you been a little run down?” “Are you craving sugar?” If you answered yes to these questions, you may be suffering from an overgrowth of Candida, a yeast that resides in our digestive tracts but can grow out of control in an unhealthy microbiome.

“…Candida albicans is a dimorphic fungus that grows both as yeast and filamentous cells and one of the few species of the Candida genus that cause the infection candidiasis in humans…”1*

In a healthy gut, Candida helps with nutrient absorption and digestion.  But when disturbances occur to the microbiome, Candida albicans can grow aggressively. Too much sugar and carbohydrates, antibiotics, oral contraceptives, excessive alcohol use, and even stress can disturb the healthy balance of  microbiota in the gut paving the way for a Candida take over. When this happens, Candidiasis occurs, affecting different parts of the body, including the skin, the mouth (Oral Thrush) vagina (vaginal yeast infections), the urinary tract, the esophagus, and the nails (toe nail fungus). (2,3,4,5)*

As Candida crowd out the friendly bacteria, it ultimately weakens the immune system, affects digestion and, in severe cases, can damage the intestinal wall and penetrate into the bloodstream releasing toxins into the entire body. These toxins can affect your body’s organs and tissues, resulting in serious health problems. “…Anyone suffering from an overabundance of Candida has a damaged intestinal wall that allows proteins, sugars, Candida, bacteria, and other microbes to escape the intestines and enter the bloodstream. This leads to allergies, a weakened and damaged immune system, ADHD, a myriad of autoimmune ailments and diseases, localized infections, systemic infections, and so much more…”(2,4)*

Candidiasis is a condition not to be taken lightly.  “…Candida albicans produces 180 chemical toxins that can be absorbed through the intestines into the blood, and that’s when the intestinal walls are in good health. Once the intestinal walls become more permeable, imagine what those toxins do to the immune system when Candida migrates throughout the body producing toxic substances that incite the immune system’s inflammatory response…” 4*

Many health care practitioners are not familiar with or don’t recognize Candida overgrowth and send patients home undiagnosed or misdiagnosed, with prescriptions that just mask the problem. Doctors who do recognize the problem and understand that disease almost always originates in the gut, will address the microbiome first and foremost, as it is very difficult to battle disease when the gut is unhealthy. There is so much research now that shows there is a direct connection between sugar consumption and disease. Sugar has a direct impact on the natural balance of the gut flora, and increases Candida. Health practitioners are finding that diets full of refined sugars, along with antibiotics and gluten, created a perfect storm for Candida to take over the gut and even infiltrate the whole body. 4*

With the New Year comes a new you and a fresh start on healing from within. If you are experiencing symptoms that you think may be Candidiasis, it is important to start now on a regimen that will prevent the yeast from growing and to ensure the growth of friendly bacteria. A great place to start is by continuing, resuming or starting on a consistent regimen of BODY BIOTICS™ Bio-Identical SBO Probiotics Consortia™. Combatting unfriendly bacteria with friendly is the best place to begin.*

Next week we will cover what symptoms to look for to identify if you have Candidiasis and the steps you can take to get rid of it.

Healthiest wishes,
