Probiotics are great defense for Cold and Flu Season

Probiotics are great defense for the flu.
Study reveals that academically stressed students showed lower percentage of cold and flu while supplementing with Bifidobacterium bifidum.(1,2)*

It is that time of year! January and February bring with it cold and flu season which is no fun for anyone. It doesn’t feel good, takes us away from work and family and can be dangerous for some, especially the elderly and young and those with compromised immune systems.*

Both the cold and flu virus enters our bodies through the mucous membranes of the eyes, nose or mouth. It can keep you down for several days. The flu differs from the common cold in that flu symptoms are usually more severe and the onset is more drastic. It usually includes a high fever, sore throat, headache, muscle aches, congestion, and cough. While most symptoms get better within two to five days, the flu can leave you wiped out for a good week or more. A dangerous consequence of getting the flu can be pneumonia, which is more common in the very young or elderly, or those who suffer from heart or lung issues. If you feel shortness of breath or it hurts when you take a deep breath, it is important to contact your health care practitioner right away. Additionally, if your fever subsides then returns after a couple of days, that is a sign that you may have pneumonia.3*.

So how can you protect yourself from getting the flu? Many people choose to get the flu vaccine, but many of us don’t. The flu virus changes each year, and even in the same year, the flu vaccine may target a particular flu, but then a different virus erupts, and people get the flu anyway. Since you don’t know where these viruses are lurking or who around you may be contagious, it is essential to arm yourself the best you can. Keeping your immune system strong, washing your hands with soap and water and taking caution to avoid those who are sick are all starters. Additionally, taking your probiotics to keep your gut populated with friendly bacteria, which is where 80% of your immune system begins is essential. Bacteria live in our mucus membranes, so keeping your bacterial balance healthy, is our first line of defense against any invading pathogens.*

An interesting study has come out of the Food and Science and Human Nutrition Department at the University of Florida. Researchers conducted a study examining the use of probiotics as they relate to cold and flu viruses. They found that those taking probiotics saw a reduction in colds and flu viruses in the winter months.(1,2)*

In a double-blind, placebo-controlled study, 581 students were randomized into various groups testing the efficacy of lactobacillus helveticus, bifidobacterium infantis, or bifidobacterium bifidum, (found in BODY BIOTICS™ BIO IDENTICAL SBO PROBIOTICS CONSORTIA™). They compared days suffered from cold and flu symptoms in a six-week period.  Results showed those who consumed bifidobacterium bifidum had significantly fewer “sick days” than those in the other probiotic groups and placebo. (See reference 1 for specifics) According to probiotics.org “…Research has shown that Bifidobacterium Bifidum produces natural antibiotic substances that kill bad bacteria. B. bifidum is also extremely susceptible to being killed by pharmaceutical antibiotics….” (1,2,4)*

If you do find yourself with the flu, there are a couple of important things you can do. One, see your health care provider within 48-hours of the onset of your symptoms to see about obtaining an antiviral medication. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends this especially for children under the age of two, those individuals over the age of 65, and for people with chronic conditions. It can drastically decrease the severity of your symptoms and shorten the duration of the flu.5*

Additionally, do not take antibiotics for a cold or flu! These viral infections will not respond to antibiotics, and taking them will only make matters worse, with side effects including diarreah and nausea, not to mention wiping out your friendly bacteria which you so desperately need to keep your defenses strong. Don’t drink alcohol, as in a “hot totty” as it will lead to further dehydration and interfere with your sleep. DO drink lots of water, stay home in bed to get plenty of rest and avoid infecting others, and let your body’s natural defenses — built strong with regular BODY BIOTICS™ BIOIDENTICAL SBO PROBIOTICS CONSORTIA™ use — heal itself naturally. We hope you find this information helpful in combating the flu and colds during this time of year. Take good care of yourself!

Healthiest wishes,
