There may be a cure for the summertime blues after all.

There may be a cure for the summertime blues after all.
Keeping a healthy gut boosts mood and mental state, even in the dog days of summer.

We’ve heard the song, “there ain’t no cure for the summertime blues.” Of course this song was about a young man “…workin’ all summer just to try to earn a dollar…”, but the blues are a real thing for many people, and the summer can be a time for some people to get depressed. Returning to work after a vacation, long days of unending high temperatures, kids home from school, and days that are light, longer, can actually make people feel blue. So what can be done for such a state of mind?1*

For starters, make sure your gut is healthy. You may wonder how having a healthy gut can help your mood, but with 90% of our serotonin production taking place in this vital organ, it is imperative to keep our guts healthy. The gut, often referred to as “The Second Brain,” has received this label in part because “…about 90 percent of the fibers in the primary visceral nerve, the vagus (the connector cable,) carry information from the gut to the brain and not the other way around…” If our gut isn’t functioning the way it should, it can be a key determinant to our feelings of sadness or depression. The massive network of neurons lining our gut is so extensive According to Psychology Today, “… studies are under way to determine which gut flora do what for our mental health and turn those findings into treatments. The possibility that distinct patterns of gut flora have an influence on aspects of our emotional processing is intriguing…” (2,3)*

Aside from ensuring your microbiome is healthy,  here are a few other ideas for chasing away the summertime blues:

Get pleasure from healthy foods: What better time of year to eat right than summer, when summer fruits and vegetables abound!  Take advantage of the availability of your favorite fruits and veggies and try new recipes to boost your vitamins, minerals and antioxidants intake. This is not only a great way to get healthy, but also to lose weight by substituting fresh produce for chips and cookies! Visit local farmers markets to get it from the source. Depending on where you are located, there could be several to choose from.*

Exercise: Warmer weather means there is no excuse not to get outside, (unless if you are in Arizona or other desert states in recent weeks). Swim, walk, enjoy the great outdoors and all that nature has to offer. Exercise boosts your mood, your serotonin levels and makes you look and feel better. Start every day with exercise to feel better!*

Rise and shine: With longer days, take advantage of the mornings and get your day started early. Take a walk, have a leisurely cup of coffee or tea before the day gets going, meditate and enjoy the cool hours of the day.*

Sunshine on your shoulders: Get some sun to get the benefits of Vitamin D and a sun kissed look on your cheeks and shoulders. Too much sun can lead to sunburn, which is extremely painful and can lead to sun damage, so only be in the direct sun for a short period of time before you slather on the sunscreen or head for an umbrella. Just being in the day light and fresh air under a tree with a good book is good for your eyes, your skin and your entire system.*

Get in the water: Enjoy the benefits of swimming and weightlessness by jumping in a lake, pool or swimming in the ocean. Being in water calms us and centers us, as we came from water growing in the placenta. Plus, it will keep you cool and keep you moving. Not to mention it is fun so it will make you feel good and chase away your worries for awhile.*

These are just a few ideas for keeping yourself happy and free of the blues during the hot days of summer. The main way to keep your mood elevated and avoid depression is to watch your diet, eat right and keep your gut healthy. The gut drives so much of our bodies to include our moods and our immune system. Treat it right, and it will treat you right. Staying on a healthy regiment of BODY BIOTICS™ BIO-IDENTICAL SBO PROBIOTICS CONSORTIA™ is important for  your daily intake of friendly bacteria to keep your “Second Brain” working right. Please note, that if you have severe depression, and not just “the blues”, it is important to seek the advice of a mental health professional as depression is a serious, debilitating illness that should not be taken lightly. If you think you may have clinical depression or another serious mood disorder, please seek the help you need. We all deserve to enjoy the summer!*

Healthiest wishes,

Kelli
