Toxic colon – The symptoms and the danger

Published by at 10:37 am under Colon Cleanse, probiotic supplements

Keep your gut flora healthy and minimize your risk.

If taking good care of your gut flora and ensuring you have a healthy balance of friendly to unfriendly bacteria wasn’t a priority before, it will be after learning about toxic colon. This highly dangerous condition can result in major infection, major surgery to repair or remove part or the entire colon (colectomy), or even death. Though this life-threatening condition is rare, it is not something to take lightly or ignore.

What is toxic colon? A toxic megacolon occurs when the colon is inflamed to several times its normal size. Megacolon in general terms means the dilation of the colon. The word toxic in front of it defines the severity of the condition.2 “…It is usually a complication of an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), such as ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease…”3

“…Toxic megacolon occurs when inflammatory bowel diseases cause the colon to expand, dilate and distend. When this happens, the colon is unable to remove gas or feces from the body. If gas and feces build up in the colon, your large intestine may rupture…”2 If your colon develops holes or perforations, or even ruptures, bad bacteria which are normally present in your colon can enter your abdominal cavity. The weakened and damaged tissue which results from toxic colon needs to be repaired or removed to avoid having bacteria enter the body. Depending on the extent of the damage, a colectomy may be required, which involves removing part or all of the colon. If this happens, you may require an ileostomy in which the small intestine is connected to an opening created in your abdomen, or ileoanal pouch anal anastomosis put in place, which will remove feces from your body after your colon is removed.4

The symptoms of toxic megacolon are abdominal pain, swelling and tenderness, fever and rapid heart rate, bloody diarrhea, frequent diarrhea and painful bowel movements. Immediate medical attention should be sought if these symptoms are present.

Since Toxic megacolon is a complication of inflammatory bowel diseases, it is important to follow the treatment plan provided by your health care practitioner, which may involve lifestyle changes among other things. Controlling your IBD will reduce the likelihood of developing toxic megacolon. Because genetics can factor into certain IBDs, some people are more at risk than others. So pay attention to family history and your body. If you think you are risk of having an IBD, seek medical attention, pay close attention to your diet and be sure to consume a healthy dose of BODY BIOTICS™ SBO PROBIOTICS/PREBIOTICS CONSORTIA daily to keep a good ratio of friendly to unfriendly bacteria.

Healthiest wishes,
