Are we really Thankful for what we have?

What are you thankful for?
Being grateful, even in trying times, may be just a matter of changing your thought process.

There is  a piece that has been circulating through social media that I came across awhile back that I thought would be appropriate to share as Thanksgiving approaches. It originated from momentsaday.com and has been shared thousands of times. It opened my eyes to how everything has an opposite, a yin to a yang. “…In Chinese philosophy, yin and yang (also, yinyang or yin yang) describes how opposite or contrary forces are actually complementary, interconnected, and interdependent in the natural world, and how they give rise to each other as they interrelate to one another…”(1,2)

I liked this piece because it reminds us to find the beauty and positive in everyday activities, and how something that is stressful, overwhelming or perceived as a complete hassle, may actually have an underlying gift accompanying it. After reading this piece, I started to create my own list of the things that bother me, and then looked at the hidden gift in every situation. As I go through my day now, and something comes up that I am frustrated with, I now ask myself what the opposite, positive side is. For example, I am stuck in a traffic jam. The positive is I have a car to drive. If you haven’t seen this list originally posted by momentsaday.com, I am posting it here:

I am grateful for…

  1. Early wakeups = Children to love.
  2. House to clean = Safe place to live
  3. Laundry = Clothes to wear
  4. Dirty dishes = Food to eat
  5. Crumbs under the table = Family meals
  6. Shopping to do = Money to use
  7. Toilets to clean = Indoor plumbing
  8. Lots of noise = Kids having fun
  9. Endless questions = Kids learning
  10. Getting into bed sore and tired = I’m still alive2

 

Create your own list of the gripes you have and then seek to find the positive underlying thing to be grateful for. You will be amazed at how it turns your attitude and perspective around. We are so very lucky, every one of us in so many ways, yet life has a way of bringing us down and we can complain about just about anything! But if we look at the bright side of things, it will not only make us happier, but happy people tend to live longer, healthier lives.
