The Dangers of Leaky Gut Syndrome

Do you have Leaky Gut Syndrome?
What it is and how to know if you might have this condition.

Perhaps you’ve heard us talk about Leaky Gut Syndrome. It is a health condition which affects the small intestine and can lead to various health problems. It is not regularly covered in the news, and many doctors consider it a “gray area” so they won’t even broach the subject. Also referred to as intestinal hyper permeability, this condition occurs when “the tight junctions of the intestine malfunction.” 1*

The small intestine has tiny, microscopic pores, which allow nutrients to be absorbed into the blood stream and circulated throughout the body. Because the intestine is “semi permeable”, it only allows certain things into the blood, and blocks and filters unwanted microbes, toxins, and undigested food particles. When the pores in the intestine widen, food particles and toxins can enter the blood stream. The result is Leaky Gut. As the immune system goes into “attack mode” the result is allergies and inflammation. If left unchecked, it can lead to a variety of diseases, as the immune system continues to go after the unwanted invading particles, creating antibodies which not only go after the “foreign” particles, but also start to attack the healthy cells. This is the beginning of food allergies and autoimmune disorders.(1,2)*

People can develop Leaky Gut Syndrome for various reasons.  An imbalance in the microbiome is one of the main reasons. This dysbiosis, can begin at birth for many, as we talked about a couple weeks ago, if the baby was delivered by C-section. Too much unfriendly bacteria can result in irritation, inflammation and result in the intestinal pores opening up.2*

Chronic constipation is another reason, as the toxins in your stool can irritate the intestinal lining over a period of time. The irritation leads to inflammation. If this goes on for an extended period of time, irritable bowel syndrome, Chron’s disease or colitis can result.2*

Too much stress over an extended length of time can also lead to this condition.2*

You may have Leaky Gut if you have any of the following:

-Inflammatory Bowel Disease – If Leaky Gut is left unchecked, it can lead to IBS, Chron’s disease and Colitis.

– Malabsorption – You are not properly absorbing all the key vitamins and minerals your body needs to stay healthy.

-Food Sensitivities – Allergies develop as your immune system responds to food particles it doesn’t recognize, building up antibodies to fight them.

– Inflammatory Skin Conditions –Acne and psoriasis are thought to be a result of Leaky Gut.  Creams are often prescribed for this, but these skin disorders can often be healed, just by getting your gut healthy.

-Autoimmune Disease – As the immune system builds up antibodies to food particles, it attacks your healthy cells as well which can result in autoimmune disorders.

Mood Issues – Because 90% of the bodies’ serotonin is created in the gut, if your gut is unhealthy, your mood and mental health can be affected.1*

Staying on a healthy regiment of BODY BIOTICSâ„¢ Bio-Identical SBO Probiotics Consortiaâ„¢ is one way to combat Leaky Gut Syndrome as getting your microflora in balance is key to healing. Other things you can do are take L-glutamine, an amino acid that has the ability to heal soft tissue to include the lining of your intestines. Omega-3 will address the inflammation, which is one of the main causes of leaky gut…so fatty fish and  fish oil supplements should be included in the diet.2*

If you think this is a condition that might be affecting you, discuss it with your nutritionist, naturopath, or other health care practitioner.

Healthiest wishes,
