Don’t delay if you suffering from Candida overgrowth

Are you suffering from Candida overgrowth?
Don’t ignore the warning signs of this serious condition.

Last week we talked about Candida Albicans, what it is and different factors that cause this yeast to multiply in the gut. This week, let’s look at the signs and symptoms to determine if you are suffering from this condition, which affects not only the gut, but can lead to vaginal yeast infections, nail fungus, skin infections and urinary tract infections. If left untreated, much more serious autoimmune conditions can result. Once Candida takes hold in the intestinal tract, it can be extremely difficult to get rid of it. *

Candida Albicans is a yeast microorganism which lives in all of our intestinal tracts along with many other microorganisms. In a normal, healthy gut, the percentage of friendly bacteria to unfriendly bacteria is approximately 80% friendly to 20% unfriendly. The bacteria to Candida ratio is about 10 to 1. In a healthy gut, Candida Albicans help us with digestion and nutrient absorption. (1,2)*

Introduce a round of antibiotics, oral contraceptives, a poor diet with lots of sugar, alcohol and processed foods, and the delicate balance of the microbiome can be compromised. If the percentage of friendly to unfriendly bacteria in our guts changes enough, it can leave us susceptible to myriad health issues. To make matters worse, a vicious cycle begins. As the unfriendly microorganisms feed off of sugar and empty carbohydrates, we experience increased cravings for these unhealthy foods and if we indulge,  lead to more overgrowth.. Yes, that’s right….we truly are what we eat. A healthy gut does not have these strong sugar cravings.(1,2)*

According to the National Candida Center, “…Candida overgrowth was rare before World War II. The introduction of the mass use of antibiotics paralleled the rise in yeast infections. Initially a prescription for antibiotics directly preceded almost all yeast infections. In other words, during the 1950’s a yeast infection usually followed a course of antibiotics by a few weeks…” Because antibiotics wipe out both good and bad bacteria, it leaves the gut susceptible to the unfriendly taking over1*

With a weakened gut, comes a weakened immune system, leaving us vulnerable to other unwanted microorganisms and bacteria which ultimately can cause us to get sick. When our guts have an overgrowth of Candida Albicans, it shows up as vaginal yeast infections, nail fungus, UTI’s and more. The problem is that once these conditions appear, the Candida has already grown out of control and a larger problem of dysbiosis (dysfunction of the microbiome) exists, which can slowly spread to other parts of the body. Once you get to this stage, Candida can leak into the blood stream, leading to autoimmune disorders to include rheumatoid arthritis, ulcerative colitis, psoriasis, scleroderma, to name a few. Candidiasis can sneak up on you and make you extremely ill, and with many varied and often unrelated symptoms, it can be confusing and hard to diagnose.  “…Candida yeast not only steals nutrients from the food that you eat, it then poisons the tissues with waste material containing over 75 known toxins. (1,2,3)*

Candidiasis is not a condition to be taken lightly, so let’s look at some signals indicating this may be a condition you have. Have you been experiencing any of the following (for more than a month)?  If you have, this is a sign you may have Candida overgrowth.(1,2,)*

  • Strong sugar cravings
  • Digestive problems to include bloating, diarrhea or constipation.
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Severe seasonal allergies and ears that are itchy
  • Brain fog, difficulty concentrating, lack of focus
  • Vaginal yeast infections
  • Toe fungus or athlete’s foot
  • Eczema, psoriasis and other skin issues
  • Mood swings, irritability and depression
  • Canker sores
  • ADHD, ADD or Poor impulse control. (1,2,3)*

You can also take the spit test. Though this sounds somewhat unscientific, it can be a good determinant that you have yeast overgrowth. Simply spit in a glass of standing water. Check it after about 15 minutes. If you see strings of the saliva going down  through the water to the bottom of the glass, or a cloudy glob of saliva at the bottom of the glass, this is another indication of Candida Albicans. If after this test and answering yes to several of the above, it may be time to talk with your health care practitioner about conducting a blood, stool or urine test to help you know for sure. 1*

Blood test

With a blood test, you can check your levels for IgG, IgA, and IgM Candida anti-bodies. If your levels are high, it can indicate Candida  overgrowth. The problem with this test, is that sometimes these can be negative when a stool or urine test shows positive. From what I have read, this is not the most reliable test.3*
Stool test
Seemingly the most accurate, a comprehensive stool test checks for Candida in the colon or  lower intestine. 3*

Urine Organix Dysbiosis Test
The urine test detects D-Arabinitol, a waste product of Candida yeast overgrowth. This test can determine if Candida is present in the upper gut or small intestines. 3*

Now you know the symptoms and warning signs along with some tests you can take to determine if you may be suffering from Candida overgrowth. Next week we will look at how to get rid of this stubborn yeast. This is where Body Bioticsâ„¢ Bio-Identical SBO Probiotics Consortiaâ„¢ plays such a crucial role. We know feeding our guts friendly bacteria is key to staying healthy, and in the case of Candida overgrowth, it is more important than ever.

Healthiest wishes,
