How healthy is your gut?
The New Year is a good time to evaluate the health of your gut and make adjustments as needed.

We hope you enjoyed the holidays and brought the New Year in with a bang. With all the cajoling and celebrating, chances are you consumed more sugar, drank more alcohol, slept less and had more stress than normal. All these things can affect the integrity of the gut and promote the growth of unhealthy bacteria. Well, if there’s ever been a good time to make some corrections to our habits and diet, it is with the start of a beautiful and healthful new year.*

So how do you know if your gut is compromised? What signs should you be aware of?

You are getting sick more often.

A sure sign that your gut is out of whack is a weakened immune system. Are you catching colds? Feeling run down? If this describes you, it is time to increase your intake of Body Bioticsâ„¢ Bio-Identical SBO Probiotics Consortiaâ„¢. With 80% of the immune system originating in the gut, if your gut is compromised, so is your immune system. (1,2)*

Canker sores

Are you getting canker sores in your mouth? Canker sores are a symptom of candida overgrowth and a side effect of a weakened immune system. As soon as these pop up, it is time to cut back on the sugar, alcohol and late nights and give your body a healthy break. Rest up, drink lots of water and first and foremost, cut out sugar…bad bacteria’s favorite food. Additionally, increase your intake of Body Biotics™ to ensure you get your bacteria back in balance.*

Having trouble  going? If things aren’t moving easily, it’s time to listen to your body and  increase your intake of Body Biotics™ and get your gut healthy. Bowel movements are an important part of our daily health, and if you aren’t going every day, or a couple times a day, this is a signal that changes need to be made in your diet and lifestyle. You also  need plenty of both soluble and insoluble fiber, an excellent prebiotic which feeds the good bacteria in your digestive tract. Lastly, drink lots of water to keep things moving and get moving yourself with daily exercise.*

If you are experiencing the opposite end of the spectrum, and have diarrhea, (including after taking antibiotics), this could be your body’s way of telling you that you need more friendly bacteria. Always increase your Body Biotics™ Bio-Identical SBO Probiotics Consortia™ after taking antibiotics, as antibiotics radically upset the balance of the delicate microbiome. If symptoms persist for more than a few days, it may be a sign of something greater, and medical attention may be necessary.1*

You crave sugar.

If you are craving sugar every day, it can be a sign that you have an imbalance of good to bad bacteria in your microbiome and that you may have candida overgrowth. Unfriendly bacteria including candida albicans, feed off of sugar, and the more populated your gut is with unfriendly bacteria, the more likely you will have sugar cravings. If you are satiated with good healthy foods such as fresh fruits and vegetables, that is a sign of a healthy gut.1*

Your joints are aching.

There have been many recent studies looking at the the causes of inflammation and how an unbalanced microbiome is an underlying cause. Rheumatoid arthritis is commonly associated with autoimmune diseases to include celiac disease, Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Leaky Gut Syndrome.  Because the immune system is so closely tied to the gut, it supports this theory that the microbiome affects systems outside the gut as demonstrated through recent findings showing that  those with RA have an unbalanced microbiome..2*

You are depressed and anxious.

There is a strong gut brain connection. If you have altered gut flora, it can directly affect your mood and feelings of well being. Referred to as the “Second Brain,” the gut can heavily influence the way we feel mentally as 90% of our body’s serotonin is created in the gut, which in turn sends signals to the brain.3*

Next week we will look a little bit closer at how candida overgrowth can affect the way we feel, and the serious health affects brought on by this insidious unfriendly bacteria, as well as the ways you can combat it.1*

Here’s to a wonderfully happy and healthy new year!
