Water is not just for weight loss or pretty skin

Are you getting your 8 glasses a day?
Drinking plenty of water is not just for weight loss or pretty skin. It is essential for good health.*

Many health issues occur merely from lack of hydration. Even though doctors, nutritionists, magazines and fitness experts all tell us to drink plenty of water, many Americans ignore this simple advice, either out of laziness or forgetfulness. But there are so many important reasons to drink water, that we all need to take a serious pledge to do it.

Water is the one beverage that is free of calories, caffeine and alcohol.

Our cells need water in order for chemical reactions to take place. We also need water so that our blood can transport nutrients throughout our bodies. Water helps us get rid of waste both through the urine and feces. Without plenty of water, we are more likely to get constipated, have headaches, feel fatigued and see a dull dryness in our skin. When we drink plenty of water, we hydrate from the inside out!*

But if we use and lose more water than we take in, it can lead to dehydration which can be a very dangerous condition. The kidneys, which are the flushing ground for our systems, are no longer able to maintain the proper balance of electrolytes such as potassium, sodium and phosphate, which are crucial for carryng electrical signals between cells. If severe enough, it can ultimately lead to kidney failure, a potentially life-threatening condition. “…Possible complications of chronic kidney failure include anemia, damage to the central nervous system, heart failure and a compromised immune system…” That is nothing to take lightly. 1*

Water is essential for the kidneys as it helps them dissolve nutrients and flush bacteria, proteins and waste products so they don’t build up in the kidneys and the bladder, which can lead to kidney stones and infections. The blood passes through the kidneys where it is filtered. It is here that waste products and excess nutrients and water are removed and sent to the bladder for expulsion. “…A crucial function of the kidneys is to remove waste products and excess fluid from the body via urine. The kidneys also regulate the levels of salt, potassium and acid in the body and produce hormones that influence the performance of other organs…”(1,2)*

On a daily basis, our kidneys filter approximately 200 quarts of fluid, of which an estimated 2 quarts leave the body in the form of urine, and 198 are recovered by the bloodstream. Drinking water is one of the easiest ways to reduce our risk of developing urinary tract infections and to prevent kidney stones or the recurrence thereof. The danger with UTIs is when the infection spreads to the upper urinary tract and into the kidneys, it can lead to an acute kidney infection which can be life threatening.(1,2)*

The easiest and simplest way to avoid getting a Urinary tract infection is to drink plenty of water! 1*

Additionally, when we drink plenty of water, it helps our skin do it’s job of regulating the body’s temperature through sweating. It makes us feel more full, so helps in weight loss. And when we are detoxing, it helps move the toxins out of our bodies.  When starting out on BODY BIOTICSâ„¢ BIO-IDENTICAL SBO PROBIOTIC CONSORTIAâ„¢,  our bodies go through a natural detoxing period, so drinking plenty of water is essential for helping rid the body of toxins as a result of die-off in the system.(1,2)*

Are you drinking enough water? “…According to the Institute of Medicine (IOM), an adequate intake for men is approximately 13 cups (3 liters) a day. For women, an adequate intake is around 9 cups (2.2 liters)…” If you can drink filtered water, that is best, but water is essential. In another post, we’ll look at what is in our water and why drinking filtered water is important.(1,2)*

Healthiest wishes,
